In the mean time, here’s another great example of how you can tweak WP Photo Ads to look nothing like the original script, and even add content to the image.php file!

We’re seeing more and more sites deplying our WP Photo Ads plugin on their blog, and obviously that’s great news. We developed this plugin for ourselves – but with broad use by the community in mind. Seeing that community downloading and using this plugin is great news for us.

We’re also getting the first result-based feedback, and it’s surprisingly good. With the standard image.php file, people report decent CTR’s between 3.5%, up to 9% over large numbers of page views. That’s pretty amazing in my opinion.

In the next couple days, we’ll be adding our plugin to the official WordPress Plugin Repository. Let’s see what the general public thinks of our plugin.

Woot! After about a month of brainstorming and development (pretty much crunched into two days of intensive testing and trial/error) we’re ready to release the first version of WP Photo Ads, a WordPress plugin that will allow WordPress users to easily change every image link on their blog, point these links to a page that’s fully customizable and thus give them the ability to ad advertising on these image pages. This can drastically up the amount of ad impressions on specific types of sites, but will pretty much have a positive impact on the revenue stream of every WordPress site this plugin is installed on…

Features of this first release

WP Photo Ads works retro-active. Older posts with “normal” image links will be changed once the plugin is installed, upping the earning potential of your old blog entries.

WP Photo Ads will not touch images NOT linking to their own full version. If you’re linking images to their full version on another site, or to its source on another blog — these links will remain untouched.

WP Photo Ads is full customizable. The image file that will be used to show your large image version is very easy to edit, and you can even build a new one from scratch to fully match your design. For the unexperienced users, we do have a standard template available with the plugin.

Installation notes

Download the plugin.

Unzip the whole folder in your /wp-content/plugins/ directory.

Upload the image.php file in the “domain root” folder to your blog root, or to whereever you want this file to be located (or create your own image.php file!)

Change two parameters in the image.php file.

Go to the WP Photo Ads Options page under the Settings tab in your wordpress, and set the url for the image.php file.

You should be done!

Additions, changes, comments, security issues, …

This is a first release, and I understand it’s probably not perfect. Anything you’d like to see different, anything you feel you could help us out with, anything at all — please let us know through the comments section below!

The first version of our “plugin” is currently in the works. When we started development on this very small piece of code we were basicly doing it for our own websites, hoping to easily up our Adsense revenue by adding one or two ad blocks to image zoom pages, without having to back down of using the original WordPress Media tool that we really like, and that our authors are used to working with.

While we were working on this, we decided this was actually something we feel a lot of people could benefit from – so we decided to take this “plugin” public, whatever form it may end up in. As it was planned to be used internally in our company, we weren’t planning on actually making it an installable plugin — but now we’re trying to figure out whether or not that’s an option. If we don’t succeed — sorry; but the instructions on this page won’t be too difficult, even without a one-click WordPress install, we promise!

Anyway, just wanted to have a first entry here on the blog; will obviously keep you posted as soon as we’re ready to release the first Beta.
